Phu's Bakery is a straightforward, no-frills Chinese bakery tucked into a strip mall on Garvey Avenue in Rosemead, known primarily for its take-out service focusing on Hong Kong-style baked goods. The bakery’s draw is mainly its Portuguese egg tarts, which locals praise for their flaky crusts and balanced, creamy custard filling that avoids being overly sweet—a distinct contrast to denser versions found overseas. This makes it a frequent stop for those craving authentic flavors reminiscent of childhood or visits to Hong Kong.

The shop itself operates with simplicity in mind—customers typically order right at the front door where a single staff member handles the flow, which can mean small lines on busy weekends. Parking nearby is ample, easing quick drop-in visits, especially for families and working locals grabbing pastries for breakfast or afternoon treats.

Beyond the signature egg tarts, Phu's offers a variety of familiar baked goods like large pineapple buns (crispy but a bit mild in flavor), sausage buns, and pork floss buns that bring nostalgic aromas and tastes to longtime fans of Cantonese bakeries. The baked goods set is rounded out with walnut cookies, sponge cakes, durian buns, and traditional steamed buns, catering to those looking to replicate Hong Kong bakery experiences without heading into the city.

Visitors to Phu’s can expect a practical and bustling little spot rather than a sit-down bakery café atmosphere. Its appeal lies in delivering dependable, authentic bakery staples that locals recognize and regularly seek out. Weekday mornings or late afternoons during weekdays offer the smoothest experience for picking up fresh pastries without the weekend crowd.

Overall, Phu’s Bakery suits anyone looking for classic Hong Kong-style bakery treats, especially egg tart enthusiasts hunting for that flaky-crumbly crust paired with creamy, well-textured custard. It’s a practical stop for locals and visitors who value familiar tastes and quick service in an unpretentious environment.

The egg tarts are delicious! I’ve ate the famous egg tarts in Portugal but they were dense and too sweet compared to these. Closed to go inside the store, only order at the door with one person working. Be prepared for a long line on the weekends.

After trying it at my friend's place, I got to get me some of these. One of the best egg tarts I have ever had. The egg custard is very delicious, excellent creaminess, and it doesn't taste too eggy. The crust has a great crunchiness to it, very flaky. 1 dozen for $18, I believe it is a good price, each of the tarts is pretty big. My wife and I love it very much.

Everything is so good here I always have trouble deciding what to indulge in (egg tarts or cream puffs) It tastes like it does in HK and the atmosphere is spot on. You will not be disappointed plus it's really easy to get to and has loads of parking. The staff are really nice too.

Decent and authentic hk style bakery. Good value - Pineapple bun was huge- is crispy but lacks flavour. Sausage bun, Pork floss bun - authentic. Literally smells like childhood. Po tarts - very flavourful and aromatic.

The Portuguese egg tarts are great here but they also sell other baked goods and cakes. The location is located in a nondescript strip mall with plenty of parking. On the weekends, there could sometimes be a small line of customers. They require a minimum of $20 for credit card charges.

I believe the pie is fresh, and it is big crunch and not to sweet, perfect. Buy bbq bao, and some bread, eat at afternoon, it feels like yesterday bread, not as fluffy as fresh one. I'm bread eater, I can tell it's new or not.
